The son of an American mother and Lord Randolph Churchill, Sir Winston Churchill rose to power and great influence during World War II, serving as Prime Minister of Great Britain and working side by side with U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt and the Soviet Union's Joseph Stalin to stop Nazi aggression and extermination. Churchill served for more than three decades under various governments, finally resigning from office in 1954. Churchill was also a prolific writer, being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. His memoirs on World War II took up six large volumes alone. Churchill was also a powerful speaker. Many historians consider his speeches to be some of the most significant ones made in the entire 20th century.
