This well-known author was born as Marguerite Johnson on April 24th of 1928, then later changed her name to Maya Angelou following her marriage to a Greek sailor named Tosh Angelos. During the 1950s, her performances in the production 'Porgy and Bess' with a dance troupe would find her traveling all throughout Europe. Not only did she write the 'Cabaret for Freedom' in 1957 but she also performed it as well and she accomplished the recording of 'Calypso Lady'. In 1960 following her marriage to Vusumzi Make, a South African civil rights activist, she became an English weekly newspaper editor after they moved to Cairo, Egypt. After returning to the U.S. in 1964 her first book was published, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and many others have followed
