C. S. Lewis Famous Quotes
Posted April 20, 2012 by Robb Zerr
A noted novelist, poet, essayist and lay theologian, Clive Staples Lewis' own journey toward spirituality is well known. His most well known work, The Chronicles of Narnia, has sold more than 100 million copies in some 41 languages, and of course, has been featured on the silver screen as well as television, radio and the stage.
Written between 1949 and 1954, the seven novels that comprise the chronicles borrow heavily from Christian themes as well as classic characters in mythology and fairy tales, particularly those of Britain and Ireland.
One of Lewis' most profound moments came in Oxford. Befriending J.R.R. Tolkein who shared his faith in Jesus with him, Lewis' own atheism was challenged. This led to the first book in the series, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, which was also inspired by four young children he and his brother took in during World War II, who also became the book's main characters.
Lewis' life was a lifelong pursuit of faith and understanding God, though he ultimately had to rely on faith alone, frustrated that his own knowledge of God though limited, was at the same time so rewarding and fulfilling. As he noted so clearly in one of our favorite C.S. Lewis quotes, "A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word 'darkness' on the walls of his cell."
