Marilyn Monroe ...Housewife?

"I'm selfish, impatient, and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control, and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as well don't deserve me at my best." Being late two hours to her first date should have been a big warning flag to Joe DiMaggio that wouldn't be able to handle Marilyn Monroe. Monroe herself knew she was a handful, as in her quote: "I'm selfish, impatient, and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control, and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as well don't deserve me at my best."

Still, DiMaggio couldn't help but be dazzled and Monroe came away impressed by the rugged looking baseball star. The signs of rough waters ahead came almost immediately, however. Though he was initially attracted to her because of some publicity stills, he didn't like her career. He wanted her to be a housewife, not an actress, let alone a sex symbol.

He knew that her career was troublesome; finally asking her to drop out of acting entirely so the two could buy a nice little home in San Francisco and lead the quiet life. Perhaps it was because DiMaggio was used to having all the limelight to himself, which was impossible with Monroe around. His friends told him he'd just have to get used to all the attention she was getting, or lose her to the world.  Rumors flew around Hollywood that DiMaggio was taking out his frustrations on Monroe physically. Just nine months after marrying, the whirlwind romance was over though DiMaggio kept his promise to leave flowers at Marilyn's grave.
